Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are your postage charges?
A: Postage is £15 within the UK, £25 in the EU zone and varies for the US. For any other countries please contact me. These prices do not include any import duties which may apply in your country.
Q: How long does shipping take?
A: I aim to ship your guitar as soon as possible after purchase. This is often the next working day. UK orders are sent by 24 hour courier, European orders usually take 2-4 working days to arrive. I do not send guitars out on Fridays. This is to avoid the guitar spending the weekend in a potentially cold, damp warehouse prior to delivery.
Q: Do you have a return policy?
A: Yes. If you want to return your guitar you may contact me within 5 days to arrange to return it in original condition and in the original packaging for a full refund. I will even arrange courier collection free of charge within the UK.
Q: Do your basses come with a warranty?
A: Yes. I give a standard one year warranty against any manufacturing defect on all new guitars. This does not cover wear and tear or ageing of finishes. Issues covered by the warranty will be either repaired or replaced after consultation.
Q: Where can I try one?
A: At the moment I sell these guitars exclusively online and I have no retail premises to demo guitars. I will therefore be uploading video demos to YouTube as time allows. In the meantime, be assured that if you are not happy with your guitar you may return it within 7 days in unused condition and in the original packaging for a full refund, less postage costs, as per my standard return policy.
Q: Why do you use D’Addario strings?
A: I chose to fit new D’Addario strings to every new Retrovibe bass because they are a respected, quality brand with the right combination of tone and tension to get the best out of your bass. I love them and I’m sure you will too.
Q: How do you set up each new bass?
A: It varies slightly from model to model but generally I aim to ship each bass in a universally playable condition. I therefore set the neck with around 0.3mm of relief using the truss rod and set the action medium/low at around 2.5-2.75mm on the E-string at the 12th fret. This seems to be a good starting point for most players and you can then adjust it up or down according to your taste and playing style with the allen keys supplied.
Q: Can I coil tap the humbucker pickups?
A: Yes. All MM-style humbuckers fitted to Retrovibe basses have separate wiring for each coil and can be wired in series, parallel or single coil configurations.
Q: Do you make any 5-string models?
A: Yes, occasionally. All current models are shown on the website but if there is enough interest I can do a small run of 5s. Let me know what you’re after and I’ll see what can be done.
Q: Do you still make the RV4 models?
A: No, absolutely not! I was “asked” by RIC to stop making the RV4 basses as they allegedly infringed RIC intellectual property rights. It is not, and never was, my intention to make “copy” basses and while I will happily admit to drawing on design elements of existing basses I believe the Retrovibe range differentiates itself in many ways from what is already out there.
Q: Do your basses sound like a Rickenbacker, Musicman, Fender, Warwick...?
A: The sound you get out of a bass is in many ways dependent on you. With the appropriate set-up, playing style and amp settings I believe it is possible to emulate many classic sounds and tones. Just don’t forget to be yourself!
Q: Do you ship to the US?
A: I can ship to the US but the costs are high. I am currently looking for a US distributor with a view to selling there direct in the not-too-distant future.
Q: Who are your favourite bass players?
A: I have quite a wide musical taste and my favourite players include (in no particular order) Marcus Miller, Louis Johnson, Mark King, Les Claypool, Flea, JJ Burnell, Geddy Lee, Gail-Ann Dorsey, James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, Doug Johns, Michael League, Larry Graham, Skeet Curtis...the list goes on...
Q: What bass do you play?
A: I tend to keep and play the first sample of each new model of bass I produce so I have quite a pool to chose from now! For rock/pop gigs I tend to go with the Vantage or EVO and for jazz/fusion I use a fretless Zygote...at the moment!
